Cam-o-lanterns

How did we come up with this crazy idea? Well…when I took Alberto home to Arkansas for the first time, it was hunting season and everyone was wearing camouflage — even my sisters (although theirs was pink camo!) That was also the time my dad taught Alberto to shoot a rifle. He was terrified and ever since that time, Alberto has always been unnerved around people in camo.

Fast forward eight years later and we find ourselves walking around the fabric store looking for Halloween ideas. We didn’t like any of the seasonal fabrics they had, but on the way out we came across some remnant camo. It made Alberto squirm and that’s when I had the idea of making them into scary Cam-o’-laterns! If nothing else, it will make him cringe every time he sees them at home. PERFECT! Read more →

We’re crazy about margaritas and after the Manhattan, they are probably our favorite drink nowadays. They are perfect for the football playoff season (go Giants!) and go very well with any type of food. To save on the calories we use the Light variety of juice from Ocean Spray. Here’s how you can make it too: Read more →

Spicy Pomegranate Blueberry Margaritas

The second day of a long weekend usually means another cookout. We’re making another delicious drink, this time with a kick of jalapenos!

Makes one pitcher

  • One bottle (.750 ml) of Jose Cuervo Silver tequila
  • One bottle (1.75 liters) of Tropicana Trop50 Pomegranate Blueberry juice (yes, it’s low-cal too!!!)
  • One cup of Triple Sec
  • One medium size jalapeno
  • Lime slices for garnish

Pour the entire bottle of tequila into a large pitcher. Next, using rubber gloves, slice the jalapeno in half and add to the tequila. Let it rest for at least 30 minutes (or longer, if you’d like it hotter). Take the jalapeno out and add the rest of the ingredients and let it rest for about 1 hour. Serve over ice and garnish with the lime. Happy Sunday!

Walnut Baluster Lamps

Alberto and I went to a salvage yard in Barnegat, NJ a couple of weeks ago. I love salvage yards because you’re only limited by your imagination. They always have lots of great stuff, and the owners are usually willing to negotiate on the price. This time around we actually saw a big concrete relief of Daffy and Porky Pig dressed as Sherlock Holmes and Watson with a title of “Mystery.” I wish we had a yard big enough for a garden so that we could make that the centerpiece! Paisley Tufted Bench

On the same shopping trip that we found the fabric for the accent chair, we also found a very pretty and colorful paisley. Finally! The perfect fabric for the second coffee table frame we bought over the summer! We’ve been wanting more seating space in the spare bedroom, so we decided to make another tufted bench. But this time we wanted to try doing it using traditional tufting techniques and make a deep tuft with 22 buttons.

I was up for a challenge! And well…it was definitely a BIG challenge!  Let’s make this very clear: this type of project was difficult and it’s certainly not for the faint of heart!  (If you do decide to try it, do it with fewer buttons and a smaller surface.)  Read more →
