Wood Shingle Christmas Tree

We host Christmas dinner at our house every year. (Well, I host while Alberto cooks. You definitely don’t want to eat my cooking!) This year we wanted something special for the center of the table. We kept tossing around ideas, but nothing really seemed right. So to help us with our inspiration, we headed down to the basement to see what we could find. (Weird, I know, but it seems to work for us!)

We were rummaging through when we saw a bundle of wooden shingles left over from when we had the house painted a few years ago. Immediately, Alberto said “Christmas tree!” and just as quickly, I said “Of course!” (Don’t try to figure out how we do this, it just is…) Read more →

Bird Toile Placemats

Categories: Crafts, Entertaining, Fall, Linens, Seasonal, ThanksgivingTags: , , , , , , , , , Author:

As you may remember, a few weeks ago we upholstered a seat cover with a beautiful bird toile fabric. We absolutely LOVE this fabric and had almost a yard leftover from that project…what to do? With Thanksgiving upon us next week, Alberto thought that it would make beautiful placemats for our dining room table. All we needed to do is stop by the fabric store to pick out a fabric for the backside of the mats and the accent stripe we wanted to have. They turned out really nicely! Read more →

The DIY Bench

Categories: Benches, DIY Projects, FurnitureTags: , , , , , Author:

Alberto has been itching for a bench under the big windows in our dining room for years now, but all of our furniture hunts have only turned up things that were too tall, too deep, too narrow, too short, or too expensive!

This past weekend while shopping for fabric (you can never have too much spare fabric at home!), we ran across an amazing looking pattern that is perfect for our dining room. Alas, we didn’t have a bench that we could recover. Read more →

New Pillows for the Porch

Categories: Crafts, Decor, DIY Projects, Pillows, Spring, Throw pillowsTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

One of the easiest ways to add a little color to any room is by making covers for throw pillows. Now that it is warm out, we wanted to try it on the front porch. We like to do that every season! You only have to buy the fabric, and you can easily change the feel of a room or space. We made these pillows the same way we made the ones in our post A Toile Bed for the Puppies! Of course we scaled it down for the pillows that we had. Try it!!! You’ll end up changing your pillows with the seasons, just like we do!

Salvaged Copper Lamps

Categories: Decor, DIY Projects, FeaturedTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

We’re always going through yard sales to see what we can find to make over. Recently, we came across  a couple of GREAT exterior Arroyo Craftsman sconces. We didn’t need sconces on the outside of our house, but we did need lamps for the family room. Hmmmm… Read more →

Strawberry Piña Colada

Categories: CocktailsTags: , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

Our lovely neighbors went strawberry picking this past weekend and brought us a big tub of the sweetest berries we’ve ever tasted. He suggested that we make a cocktail with them (he knows us well…most people would have suggested a pie or maybe a smoothie.) We listened and went old school this weekend and made Strawberry Piña Coladas!

The actual recipe calls for a lot of fruit juice which contains a lot of empty calories. To make it lighter, we used real fruit (strawberries, pineapples) and substituted the coconut milk with the beverage-kind, which we found in the dairy section of the market. We couldn’t find a substitute for the coconut cream, so we kept it in the recipe. It’s really a key ingredient and we couldn’t mess around with it…we just used half of what the recipe calls for, which was enough sweetness for us. Here’s the recipe:

Makes 4 cocktails

  • 1 cup of Malibu Rum (coconut flavored)
  • 1 cup of fresh strawberries
  • 1 cup of pineapple
  • 1/4 cup of Coconut Cream (Coco Lopez)
  • 1 cup of ice
  • Pineapple slices and tipsy cherries for garnish

Put the rum, fruit, cream and ice in a large blender and blend until smooth (I guess, this is an alcoholic smoothie after all!) Serve and garnish with the pineapple and cherries.

Sunburst Mirror

Categories: Crafts, Decor, DIY Projects, Frames, MirrorsTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

A couple of weeks ago, we made a party wreath inspired by a mirror that we saw in Madrid. We really liked the mirror and wanted to recreate it at home, but weren’t sure what we’d use to make it. But last Saturday, it all came together in (where else) Home Depot!

We were walking through the plumbing section, and Alberto saw decorative metal panels that are generally used for home radiator covers. We immediately thought about using them for the outside border. All we needed now was the small mirror for the center and we found it at Target, as part of an inexpensive set of round mirrors. This project was much easier than we thought it was gonna be, and it makes a GREAT addition to our house! Read more →

Summer Party Wreath

Categories: Crafts, Decor, Entertaining, Spring, Summer, WreathsTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

On our recent visit to Spain, we saw a lot of design ideas while shopping through home and interior design shops. One shop in particular had a mirror that really inspired us. We loved the circular diamond lattice design, but it was very expensive and we didn’t really want to deal with bringing it back home. On closer inspection, I told Alberto that I could make that easily. (Famous last words!) We weren’t sure how we would use the design, but we knew that we wanted to find a place for it somewhere in our home. Read more →
