Cam-o-lanterns

How did we come up with this crazy idea? Well…when I took Alberto home to Arkansas for the first time, it was hunting season and everyone was wearing camouflage — even my sisters (although theirs was pink camo!) That was also the time my dad taught Alberto to shoot a rifle. He was terrified and ever since that time, Alberto has always been unnerved around people in camo.

Fast forward eight years later and we find ourselves walking around the fabric store looking for Halloween ideas. We didn’t like any of the seasonal fabrics they had, but on the way out we came across some remnant camo. It made Alberto squirm and that’s when I had the idea of making them into scary Cam-o’-laterns! If nothing else, it will make him cringe every time he sees them at home. PERFECT! Read more →

Spicy Avocado Margarita

We’re starting to put together our Halloween crafts this weekend and one of the things we considered doing was making gourds out of avocado skins. Guess what? It didn’t work…AT ALL. What worked was a new margarita recipe we’ve been wanting to put together for a while — a spicy avocado margarita! If it sounds and looks weird, don’t worry because it’s delicious. Here’s the recipe: Read more →

The Pink Ghost

Categories: CocktailsTags: , , , , Author:

After rain, sleet, snow, and barely escaping falling trees, I think we deserve a big strong cocktail!!! That can only be provided by Pisco, a brandy-type liquor made in Peru but recently available here as well. It’s smoother than tequila, sharper than rum, and it’s flavors go really well with strong flavored citrus fruits. This also gives us the chance to test out our new soda maker and the delicious diet pink grapefruit flavor!

Makes two cocktails:

  • 8 oz. Peruvian Pisco (or substitute with tequila)
  • 6 oz. diet grapefruit soda
  • Juice from 1/2 a lime

Fill a tumbler with ice, pour the Pisco, grapefruit soda and lime juice and shake (carefully). Pour into a martini glass and garnish with lime slices. Salud!

Plaid Pumpkins and Flaming Ghosts

We’re going with a lot of whimsy for next weekend’s Halloween dinner party. In the past, we  have decorated with pumpkins and apples as a centerpiece, but this year we dressed them up for the occasion….with electrical tape! We love plaids, so imitated one of our favorite patterns on the pumpkins (can you guess what it is?)

To add a bit of drama to the table we decided to make a couple of additional candle holders (other than the spider votives, of course). All we did was paint a couple of old Woodford Reserve bottles (their shapes are perfect for ghostly faces)! Once again, these two projects were very easy…and cute. We love putting a table together! Drunken Pumkin

Categories: Cocktails, Halloween, HolidaysTags: , , , , , Author:

We’re having people over for Halloween next weekend, so we’re trying out new cocktail recipes. The Drunkin’ Pumpkin cocktail is more of a dessert…it has frozen yogurt, pumpkin and our our favorite liquor, bourbon. Add a little pumpkin spice and you’ve got yourself a sweet lil’ creamy taste of the season.

Makes two cocktails:

  • 6 oz of Maker’s Mark
  • 4 0z of vanilla frozen yogurt
  • 4 oz of canned pumpkin
  • 4 oz of skim milk
  • Pumpkin spice

Add all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Serve and garnish with another dash of pumpkin spice. So good and it’s probably good for you too. Enjoy!

We’re having people over for a Halloween dinner party next weekend and we wanted to do something fun and easy to decorate the dining room table. We weren’t really sure what to do until we took a look at a few remaining paper twine balls we had left from the previous project…and thought of making spider votives! Read more →

Spider Web Halloween Wreath

Categories: Crafts, Halloween, Uncategorized, WreathsTags: , , , , , , , , Author:

A few weekends ago, while trying to figure out what kind of Halloween decorations we wanted to do this year, Alberto and I came across a ball of paper twine at the local dollar store. The ball was weaved into a pattern that we really liked and we immediately thought…the perfect material for a cobweb wreath! (sorry…this is very normal for us) Read more →

A Spider in Our Halloween Wreath

So on Saturday afternoon, we were relaxing with a glass of wine, when all of a sudden, horror struck! We totally forgot to decorate for Halloween…yes, we REALLY did forget to do anything!  AHHHHHH!

So, Brent channeled back to his elementary school teacher days and came up with a really simple way to make a Halloween wreath…with newspapers, spray paint and wire hangers! Oh the (gay) humanity . . . Read more →
