Rubber Ducky Wreath

Easter is next week, and we wanted to make a wreath that would also be fun, colorful and festive to decorate our front door. As we were walking through the aisles of Michaels, Alberto spotted a bag of yellow rubber duckies. Knowing he doesn’t tend to take bubble baths, I knew something had to be up. He then proceeded to pick up a foam wreath base, and I immediately saw the light bulb! My only thought was that it was going to be difficult to cover that base without A LOT of rubber duckies. Then we saw the half round globe, and the idea was born. We’d just cover the globe, add tulle around the edges, and make a rubber ducky flower! Perfect for Easter?! Read more →

Our Crafty Pot Holders

OCH Potholders

Now that the days are getting longer, the sun is giving me spring fever. Unfortunately it’s still too cold to be outside . . . so Alberto and I decided to do a little spring cleaning with the closets. We usually donate the clothes to charity, but when I saw a worn pair of jeans, I had a different idea. Why not make them into pot holders?! The thickness of the denim would help reduce the heat through the pad, and it would add a great look to the kitchen. Then Alberto suggested that we should make them into the shape of the house in our logo. What a great idea! I found some old fabric to put in the “window,” and now we have these really unique potholders that are sure to help us in the kitchen! Read more →

We love our new urban space in DC, and we’re still trying to get everything settled. It always seems like there’s one area (or sometimes more than one) that just collects clutter. That area for us at our new place was a built in desk in our living room. We weren’t using it for a desk, so it just collected the bar stuff that we didn’t know what to do with. It always looked messy which was driving us crazy! I kept telling Alberto that we needed to buy a cabinet to store everything, but we couldn’t find anything we like (story of our lives…) Then Alberto got the great idea to just leave everything where it was! I know, it doesn’t sound brilliant on the surface, but what he meant is that we could turn the desk area into a bar.  This opportunity also gave me the  chance to try something that I’ve always wanted to do: apply fabric to a wall. To finish it we could just hang a couple of shelves, and all of a sudden, a cluttered eyesore becomes a beautiful accent area in our living room! Read more →

Carnation Paper Wreath

We recently went to Michaels to and ran across these cute little paper cupcake liners with X’s and O’s all over them. They were so cute that we couldn’t pass them up. Then it struck us…why not use them to make the wreath?! We picked up some pipe cleaners, and we were off! When we got home, I started playing around with the liners to try making a cone, but it wasn’t really working. But as I was playing with them, it occurred to me that I could add a couple of more liners, and they look very similar to carnations. Then it all came together at once. We are making a carnation wreath using cupcake liners! Read more →

Alberto and I were out Christmas shopping this weekend, and as usual, we couldn’t resist walking through a few furniture and décor stores to get some ideas for our new place. We came across some really beautiful faux fur throws and pillows. They looked and felt so luxurious — and for the price, they really should! We couldn’t justify buying them, but could we make them? Quick and Easy Bench Makeover

Categories: Benches, DIY Projects, Featured, FurnitureTags: , , , , , , , , , Author:

Our new apartment is great, but we never seem to have enough seating. It always feels awkward when we have guests and we’re all sitting on the same sofa next to each other or sitting around the rug (which is becoming more uncomfortable the older we get). We were struggling with how to add additional seating without spending too much money when our Peke Barney (during one of his manic episodes) ran into an unused bench in the corner. (Don’t worry, he’s fine. He only hit it with his head!) Read more →

Instant Planters

Categories: Crafts, Decor, FeaturedTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

My mom always says that plants make a house a home. I can’t agree with her more. So this weekend Alberto and I went out to buy plants for the new apartment, but we were shocked at the cost and lack of diversity among the planters we found. We wanted something with clean lines and modern, but everything that we remotely liked was expensive. After much going around, we decided to hold off on buying anything. However, we still needed to cover the black plastic containers that came with the plants…what to do? The solution was staring right at us… Read more →

Cam-o’-lanterns

Cam-o-lanterns

How did we come up with this crazy idea? Well…when I took Alberto home to Arkansas for the first time, it was hunting season and everyone was wearing camouflage — even my sisters (although theirs was pink camo!) That was also the time my dad taught Alberto to shoot a rifle. He was terrified and ever since that time, Alberto has always been unnerved around people in camo.

Fast forward eight years later and we find ourselves walking around the fabric store looking for Halloween ideas. We didn’t like any of the seasonal fabrics they had, but on the way out we came across some remnant camo. It made Alberto squirm and that’s when I had the idea of making them into scary Cam-o’-laterns! If nothing else, it will make him cringe every time he sees them at home. PERFECT! Read more →

Teaspoon Shower Curtain Hangers

Categories: Bathroom, Crafts, Decor, FeaturedTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

We had some down time this weekend to do some late Spring cleaning. Spring cleaning is always a little nostalgic for us because I remember all of the things that we’ve done together. This weekend was no exception. As we were going through the closets and old boxes, we found some old teaspoons that we used when we were living in our apartment in Manhattan. (I’m not sure how they traveled with us all of this time, but I guess we need to go through our boxes more carefully the next time that we move!) Read more →

Resin Picture Frames

Categories: Decor, DIY Projects, Featured, FramesTags: , , , , , , , , , Author:

When we first moved to our house we decided to adopt a botanical theme in the dining room. It’s tough to keep up as a lot of this type of art is expensive and requires to be framed professionally. But this past weekend while cleaning up the house, Alberto came across a book featuring old prints. The images were reproduction of old pencil drawings, and the book contained an entire section devoted to birds…it was the perfect opportunity to finish up the decor in the dining room! We built our own frames for this project and we also got to try out resin, something we had wanting to do for a while. The result is a set of really cute frames that are perfect for the room!
