Wooden Crate Shelf

The summer is officially over and since our move from New Jersey a few months ago,  we find ourselves still working on our new apartment in the DC area. We’ve settled in for the most part, but I never realized how much stuff we have accumulated over the years…books, clothes, appliances, furniture, and an incredible amount of picture frames. Moving from a house to an apartment, storage has become a huge issue. Decorating our new smaller space is a challenge and trying to find an affordable organizing unit that we like can be quite a task.

Looking through many of our favorite craft and DIY blogs, I saw great ideas using leftover wooden crates. Since we seem to collect a lot of books (and I mean stacks and stacks of books), why not make a book shelf to hang on the wall? The project looked easy, so it seemed like the perfect project for this weekend. Alberto wasn’t completely sold on the crate idea because we are starting to go for more simple and clean lines in our furnishings. The crate was a little on the rustic side, but I convinced him that I could make it look very modern by making the shelves look like they’re floating. (Famous last words. Never kid a kidder…) Read more →

Crochet Fans…Meet the Ami Ami Dogs!

Categories: Books, PetsTags: , , , , , , Author:

If you’re a sucker for cute little animals, then you will love AMI AMI DOGS by Mitsuki Hoshi!

Our friends at Harper Design sent us this book, and it’s amazing. The book introduces readers to various techniques of Amigurumi, a popular Japanese art of crocheting stuffed animals. The signature style of Amigurumi (which translated means “knitted stuffed toy”) are the animals’ large heads and small bodies, which add to their adorable appeal.

The book gives you instructions for basic crocheting (perfect for beginners like us!) and features patterns and detailed directions for 12 kinds of dogs, including Chihuahua, Welsh Corgi, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Miniature Dachshund, Siberian Husky, Labrador Retriever, Maltese, Miniature Schnauzer, French Bulldog, Beagle,  and even a Pug!

Here’s a few images from the book…enjoy! And here’s how you can get your own copy!

Book Lamp

While we were at the Goodwill last month, Alberto came up with a few other ideas.  I’ve been wanting to make a lamp, and so Alberto decided to use books as the base for one.  We love books, so it’s little wonder how Alberto came up with this idea.  We found some very old hardcover books selling for a few cents (no first editions, don’t worry!) which were all perfect for the base.  Read more →
