Our Crafty Pot Holders

OCH Potholders

Now that the days are getting longer, the sun is giving me spring fever. Unfortunately it’s still too cold to be outside . . . so Alberto and I decided to do a little spring cleaning with the closets. We usually donate the clothes to charity, but when I saw a worn pair of jeans, I had a different idea. Why not make them into pot holders?! The thickness of the denim would help reduce the heat through the pad, and it would add a great look to the kitchen. Then Alberto suggested that we should make them into the shape of the house in our logo. What a great idea! I found some old fabric to put in the “window,” and now we have these really unique potholders that are sure to help us in the kitchen! Read more →

Cam-o’-lanterns

Cam-o-lanterns

How did we come up with this crazy idea? Well…when I took Alberto home to Arkansas for the first time, it was hunting season and everyone was wearing camouflage — even my sisters (although theirs was pink camo!) That was also the time my dad taught Alberto to shoot a rifle. He was terrified and ever since that time, Alberto has always been unnerved around people in camo.

Fast forward eight years later and we find ourselves walking around the fabric store looking for Halloween ideas. We didn’t like any of the seasonal fabrics they had, but on the way out we came across some remnant camo. It made Alberto squirm and that’s when I had the idea of making them into scary Cam-o’-laterns! If nothing else, it will make him cringe every time he sees them at home. PERFECT! Read more →

Coca-Cola T-Shirt Serving Tray

Categories: DIY Projects, Entertaining, Featured, TableTags: , , , , , , Author:

Everyone has a favorite piece of old clothing that they just can’t bare to part with. I adopted one of Alberto’s. His navy Coca-Cola t-shirt was my favorite because it was so comfy. It had been worn for so long that it was all soft and light. But after so many years, the holes were getting a little large, and I couldn’t repair it because the thread would only rip more of the fabric. When the hole under one of the arms became so large that it exposed most of my side, Alberto had enough. He wouldn’t allow me to wear it any longer, but I still couldn’t part with it. Then this weekend, we were planning to make a tray using some of the old fabric from past projects, and then I got this great idea . . . why not use the t-shirt?! We could preserve it for memories sake, and turn it into something useful and fun. It turned out great! Read more →

Necktie Napkin Rings

Categories: Crafts, Entertaining, Featured, Holidays, TableTags: , , , , , Author:

When Alberto and I were in Maine last summer, we saw a set of napkin rings that were super adorable. They were made out of little preppy belts that used D-ring buckles. Alberto looked at me, and I saw the light bulb above his head. He said, “our old ties!” I was a little dubious, but why not try it, right? It turned out to be a great idea and the tie we used was not really preppy, but it was perfect for the holiday season! Read more →

Wood Shingle Christmas Tree

Categories: Christmas, Crafts, Featured, Holidays, TableTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

We host Christmas dinner at our house every year. (Well, I host while Alberto cooks. You definitely don’t want to eat my cooking!) This year we wanted something special for the center of the table. We kept tossing around ideas, but nothing really seemed right. So to help us with our inspiration, we headed down to the basement to see what we could find. (Weird, I know, but it seems to work for us!)

We were rummaging through when we saw a bundle of wooden shingles left over from when we had the house painted a few years ago. Immediately, Alberto said “Christmas tree!” and just as quickly, I said “Of course!” (Don’t try to figure out how we do this, it just is…) Read more →

Tree Branch Napkin Rings

Categories: Crafts, DIY Projects, Entertaining, Fall, Holidays, Linens, Table, Tables, ThanksgivingTags: , , , , , Author:

We had a major snowstorm over Halloween weekend this year and the weight of the snow caused branches and trees to fall all over town. Luckily our house didn’t suffer any damage, but we did have a lot of large branches in our back yard. I decided to cut up the branches for firewood, although I think that most of it will probably end up as kindling. The branches also inspired us to look back at one of our favorite books of the last year, Tree Craft by Chris Lubkemann, and decided to set  a few branches aside and make something for the Thanksgiving table…napkin rings. Why not?!! All we did is just cut up one branch into 1 1/2-inch sections, drill a hole and paint them! Read more →

Plaid Pumpkins and Flaming Ghosts

Categories: Crafts, Decor, Entertaining, Halloween, Holidays, TableTags: , , , , , , , , , , Author:

We’re going with a lot of whimsy for next weekend’s Halloween dinner party. In the past, we  have decorated with pumpkins and apples as a centerpiece, but this year we dressed them up for the occasion….with electrical tape! We love plaids, so imitated one of our favorite patterns on the pumpkins (can you guess what it is?)

To add a bit of drama to the table we decided to make a couple of additional candle holders (other than the spider votives, of course). All we did was paint a couple of old Woodford Reserve bottles (their shapes are perfect for ghostly faces)! Once again, these two projects were very easy…and cute. We love putting a table together! Creepy Crawly Spidey Votives

Categories: Crafts, Halloween, TableTags: , , , , , , , Author:

We’re having people over for a Halloween dinner party next weekend and we wanted to do something fun and easy to decorate the dining room table. We weren’t really sure what to do until we took a look at a few remaining paper twine balls we had left from the previous project…and thought of making spider votives! Read more →

Recycled Drop-Leaf Table

Categories: DIY Projects, Entertaining, Furniture, Summer, Table, TablesTags: , , , , , Author:

We’ve had two outside wooden tables just sitting in our basement for the last several years. They’re very functional, but they were so beaten up that we didn’t like using them anymore. We finally brought them up for our party on Memorial Day (covered with a table cloth, of course), and left them setup by the back door out of shear laziness. Read more →

From Garden to Table

After such a terrible winter, we were very worried that some of our bushes were going to be too damaged to come back this year. Fortunately, we have some very hardy ones! Every year we prune them to help the growth, but it seemed a shame to throw out their beautiful leaves. So Alberto brought in some of the clippings, and now we have a couple of bright spring arrangements for the house. Read more →
