Cam-o-lanterns

How did we come up with this crazy idea? Well…when I took Alberto home to Arkansas for the first time, it was hunting season and everyone was wearing camouflage — even my sisters (although theirs was pink camo!) That was also the time my dad taught Alberto to shoot a rifle. He was terrified and ever since that time, Alberto has always been unnerved around people in camo.

Fast forward eight years later and we find ourselves walking around the fabric store looking for Halloween ideas. We didn’t like any of the seasonal fabrics they had, but on the way out we came across some remnant camo. It made Alberto squirm and that’s when I had the idea of making them into scary Cam-o’-laterns! If nothing else, it will make him cringe every time he sees them at home. PERFECT! Read more →

Wooden Crate Shelf

Categories: Books, Decor, DIY Projects, Fall, Featured, FurnitureTags: , , , , , , , , , Author:

The summer is officially over and since our move from New Jersey a few months ago,  we find ourselves still working on our new apartment in the DC area. We’ve settled in for the most part, but I never realized how much stuff we have accumulated over the years…books, clothes, appliances, furniture, and an incredible amount of picture frames. Moving from a house to an apartment, storage has become a huge issue. Decorating our new smaller space is a challenge and trying to find an affordable organizing unit that we like can be quite a task.

Looking through many of our favorite craft and DIY blogs, I saw great ideas using leftover wooden crates. Since we seem to collect a lot of books (and I mean stacks and stacks of books), why not make a book shelf to hang on the wall? The project looked easy, so it seemed like the perfect project for this weekend. Alberto wasn’t completely sold on the crate idea because we are starting to go for more simple and clean lines in our furnishings. The crate was a little on the rustic side, but I convinced him that I could make it look very modern by making the shelves look like they’re floating. (Famous last words. Never kid a kidder…) Read more →

Wings Over The Prairie Festival

We spent our Thanksgiving holiday with Brent’s family in Stuttgart, Arkansas and it was really AWESOME (f0r a Jersey guy like me, that is). The Thanksgiving holiday week is actually a huge deal for the town of Stuttgart, also known as “The Rice Capital of the World” (I like to say it in a Celine Dion accent and Brent gets very annoyed, so I do it as often as I can). Tree Branch Napkin Rings

Categories: Crafts, DIY Projects, Entertaining, Fall, Holidays, Linens, Table, Tables, ThanksgivingTags: , , , , , Author:

We had a major snowstorm over Halloween weekend this year and the weight of the snow caused branches and trees to fall all over town. Luckily our house didn’t suffer any damage, but we did have a lot of large branches in our back yard. I decided to cut up the branches for firewood, although I think that most of it will probably end up as kindling. The branches also inspired us to look back at one of our favorite books of the last year, Tree Craft by Chris Lubkemann, and decided to set  a few branches aside and make something for the Thanksgiving table…napkin rings. Why not?!! All we did is just cut up one branch into 1 1/2-inch sections, drill a hole and paint them! Read more →

Bird Toile Placemats

Categories: Crafts, Entertaining, Fall, Linens, Seasonal, ThanksgivingTags: , , , , , , , , , Author:

As you may remember, a few weeks ago we upholstered a seat cover with a beautiful bird toile fabric. We absolutely LOVE this fabric and had almost a yard leftover from that project…what to do? With Thanksgiving upon us next week, Alberto thought that it would make beautiful placemats for our dining room table. All we needed to do is stop by the fabric store to pick out a fabric for the backside of the mats and the accent stripe we wanted to have. They turned out really nicely! Read more →

Tile Chargers and Candleholders

Categories: Crafts, DIY Projects, Fall, Holidays, Tables, ThanksgivingTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

We were walking through Home Depot, and Alberto came across a really pretty terracotta-color porcelain tile. We had been looking for chargers for the holidays and realized that the tiles were perfect for what we were looking to do with our Thanksgiving table…and they were like $1 each! This is one of the easiest projects you can do!

In addition, we wanted to bring some natural elements to the table, so we decided to make our own candle holders….out of old logs.  Read more →

Thanksgiving Table Runner

After making the napkins, I wanted to add even more fall colors to our Thanksgiving table. I like table runners because they help us do this while still allowing the beauty of the table to show through. Read more →

Striped Napkins

We generally have everyone over to our house for the holidays.  Each year we spend about as much time on how the table will look as we do on the meal.  (Honestly, while Alberto is in the kitchen, the only only thing I care about is the table-scape. Thanks Sandra Lee!)  Read more →
