Saturday was a beautiful day in Maplewood so we decided to hit the local yard sales. There’s nothing better than stopping at a yard sale on the weekend! They’re always great for a treasure find, or two. And we really lucked out…we found six treasures that are sure to be featured on our blog soon! Read more →

Recycled Drop-Leaf Table

We’ve had two outside wooden tables just sitting in our basement for the last several years. They’re very functional, but they were so beaten up that we didn’t like using them anymore. We finally brought them up for our party on Memorial Day (covered with a table cloth, of course), and left them setup by the back door out of shear laziness. Read more →

The cushions for our kitchen island chairs have seen better days. We have been wanting to change them, but it’s been one of those things that goes on the “to do at some point in the future” lists. We didn’t really give it much thought until we found this great fabric in the remnant pile of our favorite fabric store. It has everything we wanted for the kitchen:  lots of color and bright prints! They came out great, and it gave the kitchen a new look. Read more →

From Garden to Table

After such a terrible winter, we were very worried that some of our bushes were going to be too damaged to come back this year. Fortunately, we have some very hardy ones! Every year we prune them to help the growth, but it seemed a shame to throw out their beautiful leaves. So Alberto brought in some of the clippings, and now we have a couple of bright spring arrangements for the house. Read more →

Salvage Yard Side Table

Categories: DIY Projects, Featured, Furniture, TablesTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

While we were at the salvage yard a couple of months ago, we saw a great wrought iron table frame. It was missing a leg, but we really liked the way it looked. How should we transform it? Well…we are thinking of adding another frame as the missing fourth leg, this one made out of wood, which also gives it a more updated look. Read more →

Tree Trunk Tables

Categories: Decor, DIY Projects, Featured, Furniture, Table, TablesTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

We were looking through a magazine this weekend, and we saw these great side tables that looked like they were simply tree trunks that have been sanded and sealed. (And they were going for about $200 each!) Alberto immediately thought of the wood blocks sitting in the back yard from several trees that we had cut down last Spring. Read more →

Tufted Bench Redux

Categories: Benches, DIY Projects, FurnitureTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

We really do love our dogs, and they make us very happy…most of the time. Unfortunately, last Wednesday evening wasn’t one of those times. After letting them back in from outside that evening they all ran into our bedroom before we had a chance to stop them. They immediately jumped right on top of the bench that we did last September and completely covered it with mud. We tried cleaning it but the fabric was stained and thus, ruined.

Se la vie! At least we didn’t need to start from scratch. We only had to recover the top of the bench. One of the great things about doing these projects is that you can always redo it when something like this happens to you. Even if it doesn’t…it’s great to be able to change up the décor of a room without much cost! Read more →

Walnut Baluster Lamps

Categories: DIY Projects, LampsTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

Alberto and I went to a salvage yard in Barnegat, NJ a couple of weeks ago. I love salvage yards because you’re only limited by your imagination. They always have lots of great stuff, and the owners are usually willing to negotiate on the price. This time around we actually saw a big concrete relief of Daffy and Porky Pig dressed as Sherlock Holmes and Watson with a title of “Mystery.” I wish we had a yard big enough for a garden so that we could make that the centerpiece! (Alberto disagrees) Read more →

Book Lamp

Categories: Decor, DIY Projects, Furniture, LampsTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

While we were at the Goodwill last month, Alberto came up with a few other ideas.  I’ve been wanting to make a lamp, and so Alberto decided to use books as the base for one.  We love books, so it’s little wonder how Alberto came up with this idea.  We found some very old hardcover books selling for a few cents (no first editions, don’t worry!) which were all perfect for the base.  Read more →

For a few months now, we’ve been wanting a headboard for one of the spare bedrooms, but we couldn’t find what we wanted.  Headboards are expensive, and we wanted something that was fun.  Read more →
