Our new apartment is great, but we never seem to have enough seating. It always feels awkward when we have guests and we’re all sitting on the same sofa next to each other or sitting around the rug (which is becoming more uncomfortable the older we get). We were struggling with how to add additional seating without spending too much money when our Peke Barney (during one of his manic episodes) ran into an unused bench in the corner. (Don’t worry, he’s fine. He only hit it with his head!) Read more →

Alberto has been itching for a bench under the big windows in our dining room for years now, but all of our furniture hunts have only turned up things that were too tall, too deep, too narrow, too short, or too expensive!
This past weekend while shopping for fabric (you can never have too much spare fabric at home!), we ran across an amazing looking pattern that is perfect for our dining room. Alas, we didn’t have a bench that we could recover. Read more →
We really do love our dogs, and they make us very happy…most of the time. Unfortunately, last Wednesday evening wasn’t one of those times. After letting them back in from outside that evening they all ran into our bedroom before we had a chance to stop them. They immediately jumped right on top of the bench that we did last September and completely covered it with mud. We tried cleaning it but the fabric was stained and thus, ruined.
Se la vie! At least we didn’t need to start from scratch. We only had to recover the top of the bench. One of the great things about doing these projects is that you can always redo it when something like this happens to you. Even if it doesn’t…it’s great to be able to change up the décor of a room without much cost! Read more →
On the same shopping trip that we found the fabric for the accent chair, we also found a very pretty and colorful paisley. Finally! The perfect fabric for the second coffee table frame we bought over the summer! We’ve been wanting more seating space in the spare bedroom, so we decided to make another tufted bench. But this time we wanted to try doing it using traditional tufting techniques and make a deep tuft with 22 buttons.
I was up for a challenge! And well…it was definitely a BIG challenge! Let’s make this very clear: this type of project was difficult and it’s certainly not for the faint of heart! (If you do decide to try it, do it with fewer buttons and a smaller surface.) Read more →
We found a couple of coffee table frames on a recent visit to a furniture outlet. They’re supposed to look like this, and we could’ve easily “fixed” them by going to the local glass store to get new shelves. However, we thought that the style was kind of boring and not very pretty. So, after seeing a gorgeous cocktail ottoman from Hickory Chair in the October issue of House Beautiful ($3,375!), we decided to make a tufted bench for our bedroom with one of them. (we have a couple of other ideas for the second one, but haven’t decided yet).
At $75 per frame, they were a bit pricey but still a good deal. All we needed to do for the bench was buy some fabric, upholstery buttons and a couple of panels of wood, and we were ready to go. Read more →
