Teaspoon Shower Curtain Hangers

We had some down time this weekend to do some late Spring cleaning. Spring cleaning is always a little nostalgic for us because I remember all of the things that we’ve done together. This weekend was no exception. As we were going through the closets and old boxes, we found some old teaspoons that we used when we were living in our apartment in Manhattan. (I’m not sure how they traveled with us all of this time, but I guess we need to go through our boxes more carefully the next time that we move!) Read more →

Glass Tile House Numbers

Categories: Crafts, DIY Projects, FeaturedTags: , , , , Author:

Alberto and I had the house painted a few years ago, so before painting began we had to remove our house numbers. Unfortunately, we lost them and never got to replace them. After years of searching, we decided to take matters into our own hands and headed to Home Depot to see if they had the right kind of glass tile to make new numbers. We immediately came across the perfect tiles, a coppery brown and a really great ivory. All that was left to do was draw them out and grout them…they came out very pretty and so unique that they  definitely enhance our porch! Read more →

Necktie Napkin Rings

Categories: Crafts, Entertaining, Featured, Holidays, TableTags: , , , , , Author:

When Alberto and I were in Maine last summer, we saw a set of napkin rings that were super adorable. They were made out of little preppy belts that used D-ring buckles. Alberto looked at me, and I saw the light bulb above his head. He said, “our old ties!” I was a little dubious, but why not try it, right? It turned out to be a great idea and the tie we used was not really preppy, but it was perfect for the holiday season! Read more →

Wood Shingle Christmas Tree

Categories: Christmas, Crafts, Featured, Holidays, TableTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Author:

We host Christmas dinner at our house every year. (Well, I host while Alberto cooks. You definitely don’t want to eat my cooking!) This year we wanted something special for the center of the table. We kept tossing around ideas, but nothing really seemed right. So to help us with our inspiration, we headed down to the basement to see what we could find. (Weird, I know, but it seems to work for us!)

We were rummaging through when we saw a bundle of wooden shingles left over from when we had the house painted a few years ago. Immediately, Alberto said “Christmas tree!” and just as quickly, I said “Of course!” (Don’t try to figure out how we do this, it just is…) Read more →

Blue Jean Christmas Ornaments

Categories: Christmas, Crafts, Holidays, OrnamentTags: , , , , , Author:

We have several pairs of old blue jeans that I just can’t seem to bring myself to throw out. They’re very worn out, but I just hate throwing away all of that fabric. So they continue to sit upstairs in a pile. Until this past weekend… Read more →

Christmas Bow Wreaths

Categories: Christmas, Crafts, Holidays, WreathsTags: , , , , , Author:

Many of you know that Alberto and I love making wreaths…and the holiday season always gives us a good excuse to make new ones for the house. We came up with the idea of using Christmas gift bows a few years back and decided to revisit them while walking through our local market and found bags full of them. They were all so shiny and colorful that we couldn’t resist…now, all we needed was a few styrofoam wreaths and the glue guns, of course! Read more →

Handkerchief Dog Bed

Categories: Bed, Christmas, Crafts, Dog Beds, Featured, PetsTags: , , , , , , Author:

One of our weekly rituals is taking the dogs to the groomers. Barney and Duff have long hair and being boys, they get dirty every time they’re outside. (Gertie, on the other hand, is a total gem [and short hair] and doesn’t need to go very often…we love girls!) Every time the boys return, they come home sporting adorable little handkerchiefs tied around their necks. We used to throw them away after a few days, but to us it always seemed a waste to throw away all of that fabric…and an idea was born! Read more →

Tree Branch Napkin Rings

Categories: Crafts, DIY Projects, Entertaining, Fall, Holidays, Linens, Table, Tables, ThanksgivingTags: , , , , , Author:

We had a major snowstorm over Halloween weekend this year and the weight of the snow caused branches and trees to fall all over town. Luckily our house didn’t suffer any damage, but we did have a lot of large branches in our back yard. I decided to cut up the branches for firewood, although I think that most of it will probably end up as kindling. The branches also inspired us to look back at one of our favorite books of the last year, Tree Craft by Chris Lubkemann, and decided to set  a few branches aside and make something for the Thanksgiving table…napkin rings. Why not?!! All we did is just cut up one branch into 1 1/2-inch sections, drill a hole and paint them! Read more →

Bird Toile Placemats

Categories: Crafts, Entertaining, Fall, Linens, Seasonal, ThanksgivingTags: , , , , , , , , , Author:

As you may remember, a few weeks ago we upholstered a seat cover with a beautiful bird toile fabric. We absolutely LOVE this fabric and had almost a yard leftover from that project…what to do? With Thanksgiving upon us next week, Alberto thought that it would make beautiful placemats for our dining room table. All we needed to do is stop by the fabric store to pick out a fabric for the backside of the mats and the accent stripe we wanted to have. They turned out really nicely! Read more →

Plaid Pumpkins and Flaming Ghosts

Categories: Crafts, Decor, Entertaining, Halloween, Holidays, TableTags: , , , , , , , , , , Author:

We’re going with a lot of whimsy for next weekend’s Halloween dinner party. In the past, we  have decorated with pumpkins and apples as a centerpiece, but this year we dressed them up for the occasion….with electrical tape! We love plaids, so imitated one of our favorite patterns on the pumpkins (can you guess what it is?)

To add a bit of drama to the table we decided to make a couple of additional candle holders (other than the spider votives, of course). All we did was paint a couple of old Woodford Reserve bottles (their shapes are perfect for ghostly faces)! Once again, these two projects were very easy…and cute. We love putting a table together!
