So on Saturday afternoon, we were relaxing with a glass of wine, when all of a sudden, horror struck! We totally forgot to decorate for Halloween…yes, we REALLY did forget to do anything! AHHHHHH!
So, Brent channeled back to his elementary school teacher days and came up with a really simple way to make a Halloween wreath…with newspapers, spray paint and wire hangers! Oh the (gay) humanity . . . Read more →
Hopefully by now, you’ve all seen the picture of our mischievous pups on their new bed! We were very excited that they stayed together long enough for us to get that shot (and it only took 5 takes!).
These moments don’t come along that often, so we wanted to frame the picture. We’ve always found that it’s expensive to have your photos framed, and we are never able to find fun and interesting frames that we liked enough to buy.
I thought of the excess chenille fabric from the bed, and Brent knew of a piece of 1 x 4 in the basement. Of course, for us, those two things just spell a beautiful upholstered picture frame! (Brent, all of the sudden, feels like he’s in a Judy Garland and Andy Rooney movie? I don’t know what this means…) Read more →
Our little mutts, Duff, Gertie and Barney, were in desperate need of a new dog bed. We’ve been hunting for months, but nothing ever seemed right. Honestly, they really don’t care about a new bed, but of course we do! And it also has to match our decor!
We were doing what we always do, rummaging through the local fabric store when lightening struck….we found the perfect fabric for them!
Alberto ADORES toile fabric, but I just DON’T. For those of you who don’t know what toile is, it’s a fabric that has scenes on it (usually pastoral or oriental). For example, picture an old English countryside with women in hoop skirts and parasols lounging under trees. It is usually a color such as black, red, blue or green on white. But the toile we saw that day was different. It was truly inspirational. When we saw the hunting dog scene in brown with a blue background, it was kismet! We finally found the perfect fabric for Duff, Gertie and Barney’s bed. We also found a tan chenille fabric in the remnant pile that would serve as the backing for the bed. It was sturdy, cheap (very important), and it matched the toile (extremely important.)
Now we just have to put everything together. Read more →
Going through our winter gear last week, we found an old Burberry scarf that Alberto had bought ten years ago in Spain at El Corte Ingles (love that store!). The last time we used it was for a Christmas picture we took of the dogs, so we thought it was time to bring it back into use…by making a few decorative pillows! Read more →
We found a couple of coffee table frames on a recent visit to a furniture outlet. They’re supposed to look like this, and we could’ve easily “fixed” them by going to the local glass store to get new shelves. However, we thought that the style was kind of boring and not very pretty. So, after seeing a gorgeous cocktail ottoman from Hickory Chair in the October issue of House Beautiful ($3,375!), we decided to make a tufted bench for our bedroom with one of them. (we have a couple of other ideas for the second one, but haven’t decided yet).
At $75 per frame, they were a bit pricey but still a good deal. All we needed to do for the bench was buy some fabric, upholstery buttons and a couple of panels of wood, and we were ready to go. Read more →
